Top Causes of No Starts
In relation to cars, there are few things as frustrating as jumping in the driver's seat, turning the key, and not hearing your car's engine roar to life. There are numerous things that can prevent a vehicle from being started, but most are relatively small. If your car's engine won't start there is a good chance that one of the following issues is the root cause. Head to your local auto shop for further diagnostics and repairs.
The first thing you will want to check is if the battery is dead. If you turn the key and absolutely nothing happens, this is probably the case. You can use jumper cables to get your car up and running and the movement of the engine should recharge the battery, if there is no other issue occurring.
The starter motor is what gets the engine spinning when you turn the key. If you hear a loud click, or a series of clicks when the key is turned, it is probable that the starter is malfunctioning. The sound you're hearing is the starter actuating, but not spinning.
The alternator is responsible for creating the electricity that powers electrical components of your vehicle while the engine is on, such as the lights, and dashboard, and many integral computers. Excess electricity it creates is stored in the battery, so if the alternator fails, the battery will quickly be drained of its power, thus resulting in a car that can't start.
Fuel Delivery Issue
Your vehicle requires fuel to get to the combustion chamber if it is going to run. There are a few reasons that gas may not make it to there. The primary causes of poor fuel delivery are a bad fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter or dirty fuel injectors.
If you can't turn the key, you're not going to be able to get the car started. This may be due to a bad switch, or in some cars, a steering wheel lock, so try rocking the steering wheel and turning the key at the same time.
