Keeping Up with Fluid Services
Did you know that your car uses a number of specialized fluids to help your car run right? Yep, it isn't just the gas you put in the tank that keeps you moving. These liquids though, need to be drained and replaced from time to time to ensure they are free of damaging contaminants, which is a service known as a fluid flush. These other liquids are required for performance, safety and reliability, so it's important that you provide the necessary maintenance when it is needed. Check your owner's manual to see when you car needs any of the following fluid flush services.
The cooling system uses a fluid called coolant, also known as antifreeze, to help keep things properly tempered under the hood. If coolant becomes contaminated it could lead to overheating issues.
Transmission Fluid Flush
The transmission uses a special fluid of its own to assist with lubrication and gear shifting. This reddish colored liquid needs to always be clean and at the proper level to prevent damage to the transmission. It is used in both automatic and manual transmission vehicles, though transmission service is few and far between on many newer cars and trucks.
Power Steering Flush
The power steering system utilizes hydraulic power to make controlling your vehicle more simple. If you've ever driven a vehicle that does not feature power steering you know how difficult it can be to get around corners, especially at low speeds. Contaminated power steering fluid can cause damage to the power steering pump. Before that happens, be sure to have scheduled power steering services completed.
While not often placed in the same fluid flush category, an oil change is similar in principle, and done at a much more frequent interval. Fresh oil is necessary to maximize engine lubrication which helps prevent excessive wear and enhances fuel efficiency and performance. Dirty oil will become sludge like, which causes the engine to have to work harder.
