5 Common Check Engine Light Triggers

5 Common Check Engine Light TriggersThere are literally hundreds of things that can cause the check engine light to come on inside a vehicle, but a majority of them are relatively small issues that can be fixed inexpensively. That is, unless you deny your vehicle of much needed attention. When the check engine light comes on you should visit an auto repair shop as soon as possible if you want to prevent the issue from getting worse. These are 5 of the most common issues that trigger the light, be sure to take note about how some can develop into much bigger problems.

Mass Air Flow Sensor

The MAF sensor detects incoming air to calculate the correct air and fuel mixture for the engine. If it is unable to properly do its job you may experience a large drop in fuel efficiency, which is why the check engine light will come on.

Corroded Spark Plugs

If the spark plugs are misfiring it will result in your engine running very rough. Replacing spark plugs is a fairly simple job for most makes and models of cars, trucks and SUVs.

Oxygen Sensor

The O2 sensor measures oxygen in the exhaust fumes to also help calculate the proper air and fuel mixture needed in the engine. If it is found this is the reason the light came on than more than likely the sensor just needs to be cleaned, but perhaps a replacement will be needed. If the issue is not resolved it may result in problems with the catalytic converter.

Catalytic Converter Trouble

If the catalytic converter isn't properly operating you will soon find yourself with an expensive repair bill that more than likely could have been avoided had brought your vehicle to the shop sooner. This is one of the more expensive parts to replace, but it usually won't fail unless some other problem occurs, like a failed O2 sensor that goes unchecked.

Loose Gas Cap

In a best case scenario you'll learn that all that happened was that you forgot to tighten the gas cap after pumping gas. A cracked, broken or loose gas cap may allow for fuel vapors to evaporate up the filler hose, resulting in a waste of gas you never got to use.
