Common Signs of Brake Trouble

Common Signs of Brake TroubleWhile some people may put off having the check engine light diagnosed or hold off on having that oil leak looked at, there are a few problems that deserve immediate attention. If your car or truck is exhibiting signs of brake failure, which include the following, then it is time to visit the auto shop right away.

Spongy brake pedal

A soft brake pedal can represent a few different issues. Most commonly it indicates heavily worn brake pads, but it could also be something more serious, such as air in the brake lines or a brake fluid leak. If it is the latter you will not want to drive your vehicle, as your car's brakes could fail.

Veering/pulling

If you step on the brakes and your car veers to one side or the other there is a good chance that the brake pads are wearing unevenly. Other problems that could cause this control issue include a stuck wheel cylinder or debris in the brake fluid.

Grinding noise

Perhaps the most common sign of brake trouble is a grinding noise that occurs when you hit the brakes. This is a sign of worn brake pads, as the noise you're hearing is metal grinding on metal. This issue greatly reduces your stopping power, so be sure to visit your local auto repair shop right away.

Brake pedal vibrates

If the brake pedal vibrates as you slow your car there is the possibility of warped brake rotors. Rotors are what the brake pads rub against to generate the friction that brings your car to a stop. If they are warped they offer less surface area to the pads, thus increasing the distance necessary to full stop your car.

ABS light

The check engine light for the brakes reads ABS, which stands for anti-lock braking system. Be sure to get to a shop that can complete further diagnostics as soon as possible, as a brake problem is nothing to be messed around with.
